A Playground for Katie and Friends, located in Huguenot Park, first opened in 2003 as a space where children of all abilities could play together. After 20 years, the beloved playground underwent renovations and is set to reopen on April 21 at 6 p.m. with a ribbon-cutting ceremony.

The updated playground now includes adaptive equipment, smooth surfaces, and improved accessibility, creating a safe and welcoming environment for everyone.

The playground’s story began with Jane Warrick, a mother inspired by her daughter Katie, who has a disability. Jane saw how adaptive play equipment could make a difference in children’s lives, especially during therapy. Determined to create a space for children of all abilities, she raised $125,000, including a $50,000 grant, to bring the playground to life.

Chesterfield Parks and Recreation also contributed, highlighting the importance of inclusive play for families and therapy. During the renovations, the community’s input shaped the new design. Additions include shade structures, a fully enclosed gate for safety, and a variety of swings and climbing features. Smooth rubberized surfaces and wood fiber ensure mobility devices can navigate the playground easily. Original tributes to Katie and her friends have been preserved, celebrating the playground’s enduring legacy as a joyful and inclusive space for all.
